This morning began with a grounding routine: stepping on the scale, taking selfies, and heading to the kitchen for my first 16 ounces of water. Then, I bundled up and headed into the garage—my little sanctuary—to pray, meditate, and stretch.
Then, I completed a weight-lifting session focusing on my upper body and core. It felt great to engage my muscles and continue building strength.
The Importance of Rest
Eugene Peterson describes the Sabbath as “a time to receive silence and let it deepen into gratitude.” I can’t agree more. Incorporating regular rest into your routine is essential, especially in today’s fast-paced world. Many of us, myself included, spend the week in a heightened state of activity and stress, our bodies constantly operating in a sympathetic nervous system response—that fight-or-flight mode.
The sympathetic nervous system is our body’s way of responding to stress and keeping us alert and ready for action. While it’s necessary in certain situations, being in this state for too long can be exhausting and even harmful.

This is why we need to engage the parasympathetic nervous system—our “rest and digest” mode—to bring balance, quiet the body, and facilitate healing. Physical and spiritual rest helps us shift into this state and offers a reset that our bodies and minds crave.
During my morning Bible study, I came across another important reminder: it’s okay to acknowledge that bad things will happen, but it’s vital not to dwell on them. This resonates deeply with me. I’ve come to realize that I’m pretty good at weathering storms.
I’ve learned that the sun will eventually shine again if I can endure the rain. Becoming a Christian in my 30s has strengthened this perspective. I’ve found hope even in the deepest valleys, knowing that God is in control. His plan is greater than any challenges I face, and that assurance allows me to rest in His peace.
Embracing the Process
Long waits take their toll on the human body, so I’m lucky enough to realize, find, and utilize many strategies to care for my physical form so I’m ready to step out into the sun and get to the good work!
Continuing my mindset training with daily non-fiction reading, “Atomic Habits,” I’m reminded that even in the deep valleys, the journey toward the top of the mountain is where I’ll discover my pure joy. Reaching goals will make you happy for the moment, but once they are met, it’s like there’s nothing left to accomplish besides looking for another goal.

True fulfillment comes in falling in love with the process. Your life is either full of outcomes-based satisfaction—always searching and yearning—or, if you find peace in who you are, an identity-based outcome will give you long-lasting fulfillment, which is especially helpful if you are working toward rewards in eternity!
After reading, I made my way to serve in the children’s ministry at church with my daughter. She has a calling to work with infants and small children, and I love supporting her until she is old enough to look after the little ones herself.
When we returned home, I completed my outdoor time commitment with a 3-mile run and a 1-mile walk. I’m definitely feeling lighter on my feet after losing a few pounds and more supple, thanks to the yoga and therapy ball massages I’ve been incorporating into my workouts. In fact, the twitch I had in my right shoulder is slowly going away!
Striving for Balance
As I continue this journey, I’m reminded of the importance of balance. A balance between movement and stillness, action and reflection, and work and rest. Today is another opportunity to live that out.
