Trusting the Process Amidst Chaos

January 8, 2024

Some days, time feels like an abundant resource, while other days, like today, it seems to slip through my fingers. From start to finish, I felt like I didn’t have enough of it and spent the day juggling my goals, trying to figure out how to make it all work.

The Day That Got Away

The morning started a little off-kilter. I let myself sleep in for an extra half hour, which resulted in skipping my usual Bible reading and meditation. Instead, I jumped straight into my leg day workout with weights. Afterward, I had to get ready for a 9 AM hair appointment that kept me out until 2 PM, leaving no time to front-load my water intake as I usually do. That decision came back to haunt me later as I struggled to finish my water goal, finally downing the last glass just before 10 PM.

While I didn’t hit every mark the way I planned, I did manage to get my reading done while sitting in the salon chair. Later in the day, I picked my son up from basketball, finished my Bible study, and squeezed in some curriculum planning. For my outdoor time, I opted for seated poses to stretch my body and relax my mind—a moment of stillness in an otherwise hectic day.

Habits Create Freedom

Reflecting on today, I couldn’t help but smile at the lesson I kept encountering. During my Bible study, the Word repeatedly emphasized being seated with God. It was a humbling reminder that no matter how perfectly I try to plan my day, control is ultimately an illusion. Sometimes, all we can do is take a seat and trust the process.

Ironically, I spent much of today seated—whether it was hours in the salon chair or the stretches during my outdoor time. These moments forced me to slow down and recognize the importance of trusting in something greater than my to-do list.

A concept by James Clear also came to mind: habits act as mental shortcuts, allowing us to use less brainpower for small tasks so we can focus on what truly matters. Today, my disrupted routine had me constantly thinking about how to adjust my schedule and fit in my habits. That mental effort left little room for creativity, business planning, or quality conversations with my kids.

This experience reinforced a powerful truth: habits create freedom. When we automate the small, mundane tasks, we free up energy to prioritize the things that truly matter.

Final Thoughts

Today wasn’t perfect, but it was a reminder to embrace the chaos, trust the process, and keep building habits that simplify life. Onward to Day 9, with grace and lessons learned.
