Creating an environment where you can thrive is a game changer. I live in a home full of people who adore sweets and carbs, and I’ll admit, I’ve shared in those indulgences. A couple of glasses of wine, some cheese, or the sweets left out on the counter were easy traps. For the longest time, I believed I could “out-exercise” those indulgences. Yet, the scale and my energy levels stubbornly reminded me otherwise.

James Clear’s explanation of “addition by subtraction” made a lot of sense to me. By reducing friction and setting up my environment to support my goals, I found it easier to stay on track. Less wasted effort meant more time to enjoy the present moment.
Lean on Your Support System
We can’t always do it alone, and that’s okay. A from the Book of Mark tells of a paralyzed man whose friends carried him to Jesus, even climbing onto a roof to lower him down when the crowd blocked their way. This image of finding the “point of least resistance” inspires me to lean on my support system in times of need.
In moments of helplessness, the love and encouragement of family, friends, and community have helped me achieve my goals. We carry each other through tough times, paving the way for growth and celebrating success together.
Proclaiming my commitment to healthier eating habits out loud made all the difference. My family rallied behind me in small but significant ways—my husband stopped offering dessert after dinner, and we began stocking extra vegetables to balance meals. These small adjustments created a ripple effect that made my goals feel attainable rather than burdensome.
At home, I’ve also adopted strategies to make healthier choices easier:
- Keeping healthy foods visible and within reach.
- Storing treats out of sight to reduce temptation.
- Preparing vegetables in advance for easy snacking or quick meals.
- Drinking 8 oz of water every time I pass the water dispenser.
- Packing meals or snacks the night before to prevent last-minute unhealthy choices.
These strategies not only simplify my day but also reinforce my commitment to a healthier lifestyle. And because of these small changes, I can see my family’s eating style has also changes a little bit.
Building Habits That Last
It’s been 20 days since I started my journey, and the habits I’ve formed no longer feel like a burden. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is to avoid seeing these changes as temporary. I don’t want to finish this challenge just to return to the habits that held me back. Instead, I aim to carry forward the growth and habits I’ve built.
Practicing 18:6 intermittent fasting, prioritizing nutrient-dense meals, and allowing flexibility for social experiences have been key to my success. Journaling has also helped me reflect and refine my approach. It’s a practice of continual learning, reinforcing good habits, and eliminating steps that don’t serve me.
This journey isn’t just about physical health. As The Roll Model emphasizes, fostering a healthy environment extends to our bodies—keeping our tissues flexible, ensuring proper nutrition, and supporting cellular renewal. Every seven years, our bodies regenerate entirely. What we feed ourselves, both physically and mentally, shapes the person we become.
Luke 5:26 says it best: “We have seen extraordinary things today.” Every step forward, no matter how small, is extraordinary. Let’s create an environment that allows us to thrive—not just for today, but for a lifetime.
